This is the field to identify if the record in question indicates a headquarters or a branch. A branch indicates the secondary base of a business unit whose legal responsibility is borne by its headquarters. A branch should be located in a place different from its headquarters; it may perform business under a common name or a name different from that of its headquarters in some cases.

How are D-U-N-S® Numbers assigned?

The D-U-N-S Number is owned and solely maintained by D&B. When a business is first entered into the D&B business information database, we assign each business location that has its own unique, separate and distinct operation, its own D-U-N-S Number.

Separate D-U-N-S Numbers can be assigned to single locations, parents, subsidiaries, headquarters and branches. If a branch operates in the same location as its headquarters, it will have a different D-U-N-S Number, provided its operations are distinct and separate.

Private individuals, other business assets not considered Branch locations (e.g. Automated Teller or Cash Machines, temporary construction sites, loading docks at a site already assigned a D-U-N-S Number, railroad cars, utility sub stations, etc. are ineligible for a D-U-N-S Number.
